The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2) or tools in ArcGIS. The SDC data set is then loaded into ArcSDE to verify and validate the geometry.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
The geospatial part of this data set was calculated from latitude/longitude coordinates from the U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1). The horizontal positional accuracy is unknown.

Attribute data
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Created a data set by extracting state capitals, the national capital, and places of 10,000 or more inhabitants from U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1). Ran ArcView GIS command Add Event Theme on the data set to create the point location centroids shapefile. Reformatted attributes and finalized attribute order. Created ArcGIS layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices. Converted the data set to SDC.

The following steps were performed by ESRI: Simplified the AREANAME values for some of the features.
20031212
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Renamed attributes AREANAME to NAME and POP_CL to POP_CLASS. Reduced the attribute width for NAME. Converted the values in the CLASS attribute to title case. Changed the CLASS attribute value "CDP" to "Census Designated Place". Changed the CAPITAL attribute values "Y" and "N" to "National", "State", or blank.
20050317
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Added the POP2007 attribute and populated it with values from ESRI Community Data. Converted the data set to SDC. Created ArcGIS layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices.
