The following steps were performed by ESRI: Downloaded the data from the GeoNames web site. Added the POP field and calculated city population values from the GeoNames data. Calculated the POP field to -999 (Unknown) for cities that didn't find a match in the GeoNames data or didn't have a population value. Recalculated the existing POP_RANK and POP_CLASS fields from the POP field. Converted the data set to SDC. Created ArcGIS layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices.
The geospatial part of this data set was extracted from the ArcWorld Supplement database. No detailed evaluation of the positional accuracy of the ArcWorld Supplement data has been made; knowledge of the source World Data Bank II (WDBII) data is insufficient to determine positional accuracy of data derived from the source.
The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either tools in ArcGIS or ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2). The SDC data set is then imported into a file geodatabase to verify and validate the geometry. The data set is created directly from a topologically correct ArcInfo coverage.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
